7 Tips for Decorating a Tiny Home

Tiny houses are becoming more popular as people are deciding that space and stuff is not as important as people and experiences. Build options for a tiny home are not nearly as limited as many people fear. We’ve designed and built a few tiny homes with impressive storage and living space. If you currently have a tiny home or you’re planning to build one, you don’t need worry about not being able to decorate it so that it fits your style.

One of the best parts about decorating a tiny house is the simple fact that the space is small; splurge on things you love! Radiant heat flooring can get pretty expensive for a 2500 square foot home, but it’s much more affordable with 200 square feet. Here are 7 more tips for decorating your tiny home.

  1. Color Choices: Painting the walls and ceilings in your tiny home a light color will help make the space feel bigger and brighter. Choose colors that you enjoy, and splurge on high-quality paint.
  2. Changeable Color: Add pops of color with pillows, throws, and artwork. This is a great way to enhance the space. This idea also allows you to change a few small things that make a big impact from time to time.
  3. Multi-Functional Furnishings: Everything in a tiny home needs to be multi-functional. Seating can actually be used as storage as well. A counter in the kitchen can be designed with a small bookshelf underneath to hold small items or books.
  4. Natural Lighting: Windows or skylights can help you let in as much natural light as possible. Vaulted ceilings allow plenty of upper wall space for windows that will allow natural light without compromising privacy.
  5. Stow-Away Furnishings: Some furniture like tables or desks can be folded up against a wall when they are not in use. These can be covered with art canvases to keep the space looking nice.
  6. Flooring: Choose the flooring inside your tiny home carefully. You will want to choose flooring that will make space seem open and it should be easy to clean as well. Splurge on nice flooring material that will stand the test of time, because you don’t need quite as much as you would in a much bigger space.
  7. Fireplaces or Wood Stoves: Fireplaces and tiny wood stoves can be used in tiny houses as long as they are placed properly. There is nothing like feeling cozy and relaxed while sitting in front of your fireplace after a long day.

Tiny houses can be decorated just like any other house, but you cannot use as many large scale accessories. However, the house can still look nice and inviting, and you’ll likely discover that it is much easier to decorate a small space. You will want to find items that express your style and personality that will fit in the home without overwhelming any specific area.
