Winter 2015-2016 Predictions Indicate Heavy Snowfall - Is Your Roof Ready?
We see some incredibly beautiful fall weather here in the Colchester area. We’ve already seen leaves changing colors and floating to the ground, and we often smell the smells associated with fall such as smoke from local chimneys. Fall is the best time to inspect your roof and make sure it is ready for the coming winter. The Farmer’s Almanac predicts a winter that rivals and exceeds the snowfall we saw last year. Here are some things you should look for when you perform a roof inspection:
Damaged Shingles: Any shingles that are buckled, blistered, or curled due to aging should be replaced.
Loss of Granules on Asphalt Shingles: The granules present on asphalt shingles are there for a purpose. They provide a nice, uniform appearance for the roof and they can be used as an indication for knowing when the roofing needs to be replaced.
Moss or Mold: Shady or damp areas are very prone to moss, lichen, and mold. We often see it on homes near the lake or near some other body of water. We can remove it using gentle chemical treatments. We never recommend pressure washing the roof because it does damage asphalt shingles.
Water Stains: Water stains anywhere on the ceiling or the walls are a big indication of roof damage and a leak.
Damaged Flashing: Flashing is the metal around the chimney that keeps water from draining down the chimney and into the home.
Improperly Working Gutters: Leaves that fall from the trees this time of year are gorgeous. Those same leaves often end up in the gutters and flowing down the downspouts with the next rain. Gutter screens will keep this from happening, but not everyone has gutter screens. We recommend cleaning the gutters once a year to make sure they’re still working as intended.
The best way to combat wear and tear on your roof is to perform routine inspections. Use a step ladder to climb high enough to see your roof from all angles. Look for damaged shingles, moss, granule loss, and pay attention to the cleanliness of the guttering. Make sure the gutter screens are properly working; install a gutter screen if one isn’t already in place.
